Situational Analysis
The Meerwind project is to be constructed in the German North Sea, and is scheduled to start operating in 2012. Meerwind will be one of the largest offshore wind farms in Germany built so far with 400 MW, generating 1.6 billion kWh annually - enough electricity to supply the needs of 500,000 households.
The sale of the project by Windland Energieerzeugungs GmbH to Blackstone is the first sale of a Wind Park to a financial investor in Germany. Such a transaction finds support in Germany’s comprehensive regulatory framework and incentive schemes for renewable power.
